A symposium was held last week in Washington DC concerning the topic of scaling up the solar industry.
The prevailing opinion of the cognoscenti in attendance was that the government is looking for big breakthroughs that aren’t required for the solar industry to make huge contributions.
For example, energy secretary Steven Chu has said that breakthroughs are needed for photovoltaics to significantly reduce greenhouse gasses. Ken Zweibel, director of the Solar Institute at George Washington University recently stated that current technologies “have made the kind of progress that we were hoping futuristic technologies could make.”
