I just saw this on CNN. Larry King was interviewing a couple of ladies, and two UFO proponents. Of course, there was the token skeptic, and he was being attacked on all sides, even by Larry King. I felt pretty bad for the skeptic...

It's interesting to ponder possible explanations for seemingly mysterious aerial phenomena.

But when confronting these sorts of anecdotes, I always proceed from the same default position: Why the hell would you assume it's extraterrestrial, when there are quite literally HUNDREDS of FAR more plausible explanations? I don't care if the "craft" in question beamed little green bug-eyed humanoids with laser guns down onto my front lawn: I **still** wouldn't assume space aliens.

This wacky predisposition toward space opera provides fascinating (and often useful) insight into a person's mindset.

This clip makes the case that it was actually a DirectTV blimp on the way to Irving, TX for the NFC Division Championship. Personally, I think it's doubtful that ET's were headed to the game. Everybody knows they are much more interested in NASCAR.

This is excellent.

Here Steve shows how our brain can be fooled by our visual system.

Two years ago my local paper reported some 10 or so large reflective objects flying in perfect formation, high in the sky. It was easily explained as a group of migrating Pelicans, rarely seen here on the ground, but if you look up you will see them.

I've not met many people who have grown up in central montane Colorado who even knew they were here. They fly in formation just like.... UFO's do!

Realized my poor wording made it look like the ducks and geese were eating the fish of the decorative ponds--not my intent. Here in my part of the midwest, though, these pond/fountains are very common at corporate buildings, office parks and even cemetaries. Geese and ducks frequent them the year 'round.

First, my apologies for this being so long:

I posted this personal anecdote on the SGU message boards awhile back, but it's worth repeating because my experience turns out to be pretty common.

One night a few years ago, I saw a large, silent object float over my house, about 20 feet above the highest peak of the roof. It was one of those oft-reported "black triangles," and I was utterly shocked when I saw it. The outside edges of this object were illuminated with bright white lights and it was obviously bigger than my home.

But...a change in perspective, a telltale "honk," the flicker of a wing...

I realized it was a flight of geese passing overhead (much higher than 20ft above my home, I'm sure), in a V formation. Their underbellies were reflecting the city lights like mirrors. I used to think this was a trite, closeminded brushoff explanation, but it's really amazing how bright and silent and solid it appeared--all for about 3-5 seconds. During that brief moment, I was a believer.

Maybe you could add birds to the list of possible explanations--migratory patterns for many waterfoul are askew due to human intervention (example: decorative heated pools stocked with fish to attract said birds), and you can see all during the winter months ducks and geese going north to south, south to north...they're very busy creatures.

Just a thought.
